MARKING

Traceability of mechanical components is highly required in the manufacturing industry  across a variety of sectors.

One of the most widely used technologies for ensuring component traceability is dot-peen marking, also known as stamping.

Dot-peen marking is performed using a stylus that impacts a surface at very high speed, creating permanent marks that generate letters, numbers, logos, QR codes, and data matrix codes.

This allows for the unique identification of each component, enabling traceability throughout the entire industrial manufacturing process.

DOTPEEN MARKING

Dot peen marking of mechanical components, also known as stamping, is a direct marking technology that uses an high speed oscillating tool - the stylus - that thanks to controlled impacts onto the surface  permanently engraves alphanumeric strings, identification batches, logos, QR codes, and data matrix codes on a wide variety of products and materials.

Dot peen marking is highly regarded for its efficiency and rapid ROI.

Unlike other marking technologies, the engraving process does not require consumables such as ink or labels, significantly reducing production operating costs.

HOW DOES DOTPEEN MARKING WORKS?

The operating principle of dot peen marking involves the stylus that, via an electromechanical or pneumatic system, generates high speed controlled micro-impacts on the surface of the component to be marked.

Each impact generates a dot, repeated impacts generate dot matrices that can generate text, numbers, logos, QR codes, or data matrices.

Over the years, dot peen marking has established itself as a permanent marking method for mechanical components made of aluminum, steel, alloys, and carbide - materials that resist slight deformations generated by the tool without compromising their integrity.

The principle of dot peen marking involves the use of a tungsten carbide tip that strikes the surface of the component or piece to be marked.

To date, the universally established and recognized industry benchmark - recognized standard technology in industry - is PNEUMATIC MICRO-PERCUSSION. However, old, now outdated technologies are still in use on the market, such as stamping using mechanical dowels or micro-percussion machines with an electromagnetic operating principle that require frequent maintenance and spare parts.

Over the years, pneumatic dot peen machines have established themselves over electromechanical dot peen machines for several technical reasons, including:

  • SUPERIOR QUALITY and MAXIMUM RELIABILITY

Ability to create continuous line engravings and/or microcharacters starting from 1 mm high.

  • MAXIMUM  SPEED COST-EFFECTIVE

Virtually zero operating costs.

  • DEEP ENGRAVING

Greater marking depth that can be easily adjusted.

  • FLEXIBILITY

Adaptability to complex surfaces: The dot peen marking system can be applied to flat, curved, or irregular surfaces, making it ideal for complex mechanical parts.

  • HIGH RESISTANCE

Abrasion resistance and, more generally, dot peen marking ensure resistance to extreme conditions such as high temperatures, sandblasting, surface treatments, and exposure to chemicals or atmospheric agents.

Given these considerations, dot peen marking ensures component identification and traceability throughout their life cycle. In addition, dot peen marking is also characterized by its durability, making it an ideal choice for sectors requiring true traceability, such as automotive, aerospace, metallurgy, foundry, energy, and general manufacturing.

MARKING IN FOUNDRY and METALLURGY  SECTORS

Dot peen marking or micro-percussion marking is a technology widely used in foundries and metallurgy to ensure the traceability of metal components both during the production cycle and throughout their life cycle.

To meet the specific production needs of foundries and mechanical workshops, we have developed specific solutions for:

  • High temperatures

  • Automated systems Robotic cells

  • Harsh environments with wet and/or oil residues,

  • CNC machining

  • 3D marking on curved or inclined surfaces

  • Micro-percussion marking visible after sandblasting components

  • Micro-percussion marking visible after cataphoresis, surface treatments, or painting

POSSIBLE DOTPEEN APPLICATIONS

Industrial dot peen marking offers a variety of applications in various industries:

  • AUTOMOTIVE

Identification of engines, frames, gears, and other mechanical components to ensure traceability and prevent errors in the supply chain.

  • AERONAUTICS

Marking of components such as engine parts and structural components to ensure safety and facilitate maintenance in a highly regulated industry requiring the highest quality standards.

  • FOUNDRY AND METALLURGY

Engraving of metal components such as pipes, plates, fittings, flanges, and profiles.

  • INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY

Identification of tools and machine parts to avoid confusion during assembly and ensure efficient maintenance.

  • ELECTRONICS

Marking of connectors, couplings, and plug-in components. ENERGY Marking of flange parts, fittings, and components for the oil and gas industry.

SCRIBING MARKING

This engraving technology is a variant of micro-percussion: the tool slides over the surface, removing chips.

The advantage is that the marking process is silent but involves material removal.

Setup and maintenance costs are quite higher than those for micro-percussion marking.
